Step 1: Inspection & Moisture Testing

Assess the Wood: Check for rotted boards, loose fasteners, and previous coating failures. Replace any damaged lumber before proceeding.

Test Moisture Content: Use a moisture meter to ensure the wood is below 15% moisture content. Sealing wood that is too damp will trap moisture and cause premature failure.

Step 2: Stripping & Deep Cleaning

Apply Wood Stripper / Cleaner: Treat the deck with a professional-grade wood cleaner or stripper to break down old failing finishes, gray wood fibers, mildew, and UV damage.

Rinse & Neutralize: Rinse thoroughly using a low-pressure power wash to avoid gouging or "furring" the soft wood grain. Follow with a wood brightener/neutralizer to restore the wood's natural pH and open up the pores for maximum stain absorption.

Step 3: Thorough Drying

Allow Adequate Dry Time: Let the deck dry completely for 48 to 72 hours (depending on weather and humidity) before moving on to sanding.

 

Step 4: Sanding for Maximum Adhesion

Sand Surfaces & Edges: Sand the deck boards using 60-to-80 grit sandpaper to smooth out raised grain, remove any remaining stubborn residue, and open up the wood pores.

Remove Dust: Thoroughly blow off and sweep away all sanding dust so it doesn't interfere with the stain penetration.

Step 5: Application of Oil-Based Stain/Sealer

Apply the First Coat: Use a brush, to apply a rich coat of our preferred oil-based sealer.

Apply the Second Coat (Wet-on-Wet): If the wood is highly porous, apply a second coat while the first is still damp, ensuring the wood drinks in all the protection it can hold without leaving excess surface film.

Wipe Excess: Back-brush or wipe up any puddles or pooling product to guarantee an even, uniform finish that won't peel or flake.
